The Purpose of Advisory
The Advisory Program at Newington High School has a specific purpose. This program is intended to not only create an environment where students can build connections and develop a relationship with an adult in the building, but also provide students with an opportunity to further develop relationships with their peers and within their community. In addition, the time set aside for the Advisory Program should be used as a time for each student to reflect on their own personal social and civic growth, involvement in the community, and their academic performance. This Advisory Program was designed to play a major role in supporting our students’ continuous progress toward becoming life-long learners.
Many of the topics covered in Advisory have been addressed in other courses, such as Wellness, Developmental Guidance, Social Studies, English, Math, Science, World Language, etc. The purpose of Advisory is reinforce the concepts they have already learned so that more connections can be made and the skills are transferred to all aspects of life.
The Advisor's Role
The advisor acts as an advocate for all his/her advisees. They demonstrate support and flexibility. Although an Advisory Program schedule is provided, advisors may encourage the discussion of another topic that comes up. The advisor is present to facilitate student activity and growth. While the advisor is not expected to be an expert on all topics, the advisor serves to guide students through the process of leaning.
